Role overview 

We are looking for an experienced Data Architect to support the design and implementation of a Unified Data Platform based on Microsoft Fabric. The role will focus on defining the platform architecture, data integration approach and foundational data structures required to support scalable analytics use cases. 

This opportunity is available for contractors and full-time employees within the EU.  

Key responsibilities 

  • Lead the data architecture design for a Microsoft Fabric-based Unified Data Platform.  
  • Assess existing data sources, business requirements, dependencies and integration needs.  
  • Define the high-level platform architecture and produce the Platform High-Level Design documentation.  
  • Design a scalable Medallion Architecture using Bronze, Silver and Gold data layers.  
  • Define the use of Microsoft OneLake, Lakehouse, Warehouse and Delta Tables.  
  • Design the overall data ingestion, transformation and orchestration approach.  
  • Define how curated data will be exposed through SQL and Warehouse endpoints.  
  • Support the design of semantic models for downstream Power BI reporting.  
  • Establish appropriate platform, workspace and data organisation standards.  
  • Support the creation and prioritisation of the technical backlog.  
  • Identify and shape high-value analytics use cases for future delivery.  
  • Ensure that the platform design is scalable, secure, maintainable and suitable for future expansion.  
  • Work with engineering teams during development and integration activities.  
  • Review delivered solutions and ensure alignment with the agreed architecture.  
  • Contribute to sprint planning, backlog refinement and sprint reviews.  
  • Support technical documentation, knowledge transfer and platform handover.  
  • Help explore practical AI and analytics opportunities that could automate or enhance public services.  

Required Experience 

  • At least 7 years of relevant professional experience, including strong experience designing modern cloud data platforms and at least 3 years in a Data Architect, Solution Architect, Lead Data Engineer or similar architecture-focused role.  
  • At least 2 years of hands-on architecture experience with Microsoft Fabric.  
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft OneLake, Fabric Lakehouse and Fabric Warehouse.  
  • Experience designing Medallion Architecture using Bronze, Silver and Gold layers.  
  • Strong knowledge of data ingestion, ETL/ELT and orchestration patterns.  
  • Experience with Delta Tables and modern data lakehouse architectures.  
  • Understanding of SQL endpoints, data warehouses and semantic models.  
  • Experience designing solutions that support Power BI reporting and analytics.  
  • Ability to translate business requirements and use cases into scalable technical designs.  
  • Experience producing High-Level Design and other technical architecture documentation.  
  • Strong understanding of data integration, security, governance and scalability principles.  
  • Experience working in Agile, sprint-based delivery environments.  
  • Strong stakeholder communication and workshop facilitation skills.
